This column is for foreigners who want to travel in Japan by Hitchhike. We will provide you informations about Japanese Hitchhike and help you to make your trip in japan more smooth.

Can you speak Japanese?

If you can speak, or read/write Japanese, it is more easy to communicate with drivers and you can expect more smooth trip by Hitchhike. If you cannot, however, you can travel in japan by Hitchhike well.
Most of Japanese drivers are not good at understanding English. Japanese language ability makes it possible, to ask drivers where they go and how their schedule is, and to tell your destination and plan clearly and directly.
If you can not speak Japanese, to be picked up, you have better to show placard on which your destination are written to drivers at somewhere standing out, and wait someone who will stop and pick you up. This method of Hitchhike is not of better efficiency than Direct-speaking-method, but a major one.
